All you need to know
Meet your guide at the tour starting point in front of the Mirabell Palace. Get comfortable in a luxury Bus/Van for a 1-hour drive south through the Salzach river valley and the Alps (Tennengebirge). On our way up to the Ice Caves, you will enjoy dramatic views of the Hohenwerfen Castle, an iconic hilltop castle used as a backdrop in many films such as The Sound of Music, Where Eagle’s Dare and most recently, Man in The High Castle. Upon arrival at the Ice Caves car park, we will jump the queue at the ticket office and start our 20-minute walk to the cable car. After a breathtaking 3-minute cable car ride, we will walk for another 20 minutes whilst enjoying the beautiful view of the surrounding mountains framing the entrance of the Werfen Ice Caves. At the entrance your tour guide will introduce you to your local expert cave guide and you will enjoy around 70 minutes in the vast underground labyrinth of icy caverns. The cave extends for more than 26 miles (42 km) through the heart of Hochkogel mountain. During your visit you will discover the first mile and climb up and back down 700 steps.
After experiencing this breath-taking natural wonder you will make your way down to a typical Austrian mountain inn, where you can enjoy Austrian food and drinks (own expense). Relax and recharge your batteries before you take the cable car down and walk back to the bus.
On the way back to the city of Salzburg, sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful Alpine scenery.
Preparations for your visit:
Walking boots or sports shoes and warm clothing are recommended. Even in summer the temperature in the ice cave is usually below freezing. Lamps are handed out at the entrance to the cave, and during the tour, additional magnesium lighting highlights the ice sculptures to great effect. The cave itself is a national monument and may only be entered by authorized guides.
Health and Fitness:
Visitors have to walk uphill for 20 minutes twice before getting to the entrance of the Ice Cave. In the cave you will have to climb 134 meters, which is equivalent to climbing the stairs in a high block of flats. Each individual must decide for themself whether they are physically capable or not. The beauty and breath-taking dimensions of the cave provide plenty of reward for the effort! Although the speed of the guided tour is tailored to the group, we advise those with serious walking difficulties or heart circulation problems not to visit the caves.
Parents must decide themselves whether the relatively long walk and cold temperatures are suitable for young children. Experience has taught us that it is not suitable for many children below the age of 6 years If children accompany the group, they should wear warm clothing, as well as gloves and a hat.
